Space in Horizon 2020

The objective of Space under Horizon 2020 is to foster a competitive and innovative space industry and research community to develop and exploit space infrastructure to meet future European Union policy and societal needs. European space research is identified by Horizon 2020 as one of Europe’s ‘key industrial technologies’ highlighting its potential for EU innovation and competitiveness.

The Space programme under Horizon 2020 is placed under the pillar “Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies” (LEIT) and comprises the following topics:

  • Satellite Navigation
  • Earth Observation
  • Space Technologies – critical technologies, bottom up technologies, launcher, in orbit validation, robotics, electrical propulsion, etc.
  • Protection of Space Assets – space debris, space weather, Near Earth Objects
  • Space Science and Exploration – exploitation of mission data, ISS experiments, etc.
  • International Cooperation – dedicated collaboration for mutual benefit

  1. Health, demographic change and wellbeing – using space data for health applications
  2. Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the Bioeconomy – the application of space data for areas such as precision farming and marine resources management
  3. Secure, clean and efficient energy – supporting energy research in areas such as market uptake and renewable energy
  4. Smart, green and integrated transport – several opportunities, especially for satellite navigation in areas such as logistics and transport automation
  5. Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials – includes a dedicated EO call with topics using GEOSS and Copernicus data
  6. Europe in a changing world – inclusive, innovative and reflective societies – satellite data to support call objectives, for example in the protection of cultural heritage
  7. Secure societies – protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens – using space data to support security solutions as well as the protection of key infrastructure.
